1 SYDNEY ROOSTERS (1)
Win-loss record: 4-1
Hallelujah! Finally, a team holds on to top spot for two straight
weeks. The Roosters have got the depth to match their enthusiasm -
and it's hard to hate them when they are coached by 'Freddie'
Fittler.
2 BRISBANE (2)
Win-loss record: 4-1
Forced to go on the road for the second straight week, they
bounced back from the loss to the Storm by comfortably beating the
Knights. Now, will they be the team that ends the unbeaten home run
of the Titans?
3 MELBOURNE (3)
Win-loss record: 3-2
It's a fair bet that, at the end of the the regular season, the
Sharks - who beat the Storm in Melbourne in round two - will still
be the only visiting team to have won down there. Last year's
premiers are rocking again.
4 GOLD COAST (4)
Win-loss record: 4-1
Last week's top four all won, and three of them - including the
Titans - did it on the road. You've got to love it when Scott
Prince does the old show and go. He's the magic man - now you see
him, now you don't.
5 CRONULLA (6)
Win-loss record:4-1
They deserve credit for the fact they keep winning, but even their
coach - Ricky Stuart - admits concern about their inability to
score points. Amazingly, they have still conceded more points than
they have scored.
6 MANLY (5)
Win-loss record: 2-3
They were halfway through turning the corner after their wins over
the Warriors and Rabbitohs, but the Storm let them know where they
really stood by belting them in the grand final rematch. Still a
fair bit of work to do.
7 WARRIORS (10)
Win-loss record: 3-2
Three wins at home and two sizeable losses on the road. Now, after
two straight home games, they go back on the road against the
Cowboys, who thrashed them in Townsville in last year's finals
series. Mmm.
8 NORTH QUEENSLAND (13)
Win-loss record: 2-3
It sure hasn't hurt them that Titans halfback Scott Prince has lit
a fire under Cowboys No.7 Johnathan Thurston in the countdown to
Test selection. Thurston is answering the challenge strongly.
9 CANBERRA (14)
Win-loss record: 3-2
For a long time in their game against the Tigers, it looked like
the Raiders were going to lose. But then they found a way to win.
They've got a knack of doing that - even with some of their best
players out.
10 BULLDOGS (7)
Win-loss record: 2-3
Prediction: this season is not going to get any easier for them.
The Warriors butchered a few tries in the first half, but still
ended up beating them by 20 points. There are some gaping holes in
this team.
11 PARRAMATTA (8)
Win-loss record: 2-3
The news about Tim Smith is sad, but on a football level the Eels
will be better off through Brett Finch and Feleti Mateo reuniting
in the halves. Mateo could prove the gamebreaker against the Sea
Eagles.
12 NEWCASTLE (9)
Win-loss record: 2-3
The Knights remain honest, but they have lost three in a row now
and it gets even harder for them this week, when they head to
Gosford to play the Roosters. They really need to hang tough
through this period.
13 WESTS TIGERS (11)
Win-loss record: 2-3
No wonder coach Tim Sheens was so disappointed after the loss to
the Raiders. In terms of the one that got away, that was like the
juicy flathead that you put the net under only to see it fall
through a hole.
14 PENRITH (12)
Win-loss record: 2-3
When it's all said and done, the Panthers are a mid-range team at
best. Sure, they had three regulars out against the Roosters, but
so did the Roosters. The difference in class was clear and that
won't change.
15 ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA (15)
Win-loss record: 1-4
The hapless Dragons were struggling even with Mark Gasnier in
their side and now they have to do without him for a month because
of injury. They will be lucky if they win a game during that
time.
16 SOUTH SYDNEY (16)
Win-loss record: 0-5
Either their key players aren't taking the bit between their teeth
and pushing hard enough to make something happen or they're simply
not good enough. If it's the latter then it's going to be a long
season.
