1 MELBOURNE (1)

Win-loss record: 5-2

Plenty of catching up to be done if anyone is to stop the Storm. Second straight away game, short turnaround, Slater off injured, hammered in the penalties - and still none of it mattered against the Cowboys.

2 GOLD COAST (2)

Win-loss record: 6-1

The Titans folded in the second half of last season, but they look like sticking around for the finals this time. They've got a tremendous combination of power forwards, quick backs and ultra-confident playmakers.

3 BRISBANE (4)

Win-loss record: 5-2

Right now, they look to be the biggest threat to the Storm. Lockyer's successful return from injury against the Rabbitohs was a huge plus, but just as encouraging was the form of wild-haired Thaiday in the forwards.

4 MANLY (5)

Win-loss record: 4-3

Still a few things to iron out - they should not be falling behind 10-0 at home to a mid-range team like the Bulldogs and five-eighth remains a problem - but signs are there that they will be in the thick of it come finals time.

5 SYDNEY ROOSTERS (3)

Win-loss record: 4-3

he bye has come at a good time for them. In racing parlance, they have gone from pulling after five rounds to hard ridden after seven. They were flat against the Dragons and got what they deserved.

6 NORTH QUEENSLAND (6)

Win-loss record: 3-4

Losing by two points at home to the defending premiers doesn't look bad on paper, but considering the difficulties the Storm faced it was probably the best chance the Cowboys will get to beat them all year.

7 NEWCASTLE (7)

Win-loss record: 3-3

Coming off the bye and preparing for a huge home game against competition leaders the Titans. Coach Smith specialises in getting a team ready for a challenge like this. It will be up to the Knights to follow the plan.

8 WESTS TIGERS (12)

Win-loss record: 4-3

The difference between them and the Sharks was that the Tigers were more prepared to take a chance when the game was there to be won. The fact they are adventurous will hopefully get them to the finals.

9 CRONULLA (8)

Win-loss record:4-3

If you had the choice between being bitten by a shark or watching the Sharks play, which would you choose? I sense some indecision out there. Oh, what's a leg anyway, as long as you've still got one to stand on.

10 CANBERRA (10)

Win-loss record: 3-3

After having last weekend off, the Raiders hit the road for a game against the Warriors. They're going to have to come up with more points than they averaged in their first six games if they hope to win this one.

11 BULLDOGS (9)

Win-loss record: 3-4

Their form is becoming very predictable. They will win most of their games against teams in the bottom half of the table, lose most against teams in the top half and either just make or just miss out on the finals.

12 WARRIORS (11)

Win-loss record: 3-4

They have won all three of their home games and lost all four away. This trend will end eventually, probably with a home loss, because the away form must be putting increasing pressure on them to win at home.

13 PENRITH (13)

Win-loss record: 3-3

The Panthers went into their bye weekend feeling good about themselves because of an extra-time win over the Sharks and now they are at home against the erratic Eels. This is definitely another one they can win.

14 PARRAMATTA (14)

Win-loss record: 2-4

When are the Eels going to aim up for 80 minutes in a match? They have drifted in and out of every game they have played this season. Hopefully, they used part of their bye weekend to look in the mirror.

15 ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA (15)

Win-loss record: 2-5

Despite a win, the Dragons don't move, because the two teams immediately above them didn't play and still have better winning percentages than them - and because one game is no proof with this team.

16 SOUTH SYDNEY (16)

Win-loss record: 0-7

Some of the Rabbitohs have been dropped for having a few beers after the loss to the Broncos. It would be understandable if their fans were giving it a nudge, too. This run of form has brought back bad memories.
