1 MELBOURNE (1)
Win-loss record: 8-4
If you think that losing to the Titans when the Storm had 10
players out due to State of Origin should cost them top spot, you
are crazy. Origin has forced them to virtually concede two games,
which is ridiculous.
2 MANLY (3)
Win-loss record: 8-4
Great display to thrash the Roosters. Sure, the Roosters had four
Origin players out, but the Sea Eagles had a few players missing as
well and, anyway, the Roosters beat the Eels without the same
players before Origin I.
3 SYDNEY ROOSTERS (2)
Win-loss record: 8-4
They will improve considerably with the return of their Origin
stars, but what the Sea Eagles did to them should still serve as a
warning to coach Brad Fittler that they have a few things they need
to work on.
4 CRONULLA (5)
Win-loss record:8-4
Big effort to beat the in-form Panthers on the road, minus Origin
stars Greg Bird and Paul Gallen and injured fullback Brett Kearney.
They are getting great stuff out of halves Brett Kimmorley and
Brett Seymour.
5 BRISBANE (4)
Win-loss record: 7-5
The Origin period has been tough on them already and now they must
wait to find out how long superstar Darren Lockyer will be out for
this time. He must get himself right or the Broncos can forget
about this season.
6 GOLD COAST (6)
Win-loss record: 8-4
Their win over a Storm outfit that had no chance because of Origin
may not have been pretty, but all that matters is that they got the
job done. Now they can take stock with the bye and prepare for a
run to the finals.
7 WESTS TIGERS (8)
Win-loss record: 7-5
The Tigers appear to be slipping into a groove and as long as
their triumvirate of attacking spearheads - Brett Hodgson, Benji
Marshall and Robbie Farah - stay fit the second half of the season
should be good.
8 PENRITH (7)
Win-loss record: 6-5
They really let one slip against the Sharks. That was a game, at
home, in which they should have gone out and got the job done, but
they didn't want it as badly as the Sharks did. Hopefully, it will
be a lesson learned.
9 ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA (9)
Win-loss record: 6-6
Their win-loss record is out of the negative for the first time
since round two. The draw during the Origin period has been kind to
them, but they are finishing off opponents now and that's the main
thing.
10 NEWCASTLE (10)
Win-loss record: 5-6
After three straight losses they needed to steady the ship with a
win - and they did that against the Bulldogs. It wasn't stunning,
but no-one said the Knights were world-beaters. They're rebuilding,
and going OK.
11 PARRAMATTA (12)
Win-loss record: 5-6
If they hadn't beaten the Raiders at home we could have just about
rung the bell on their season. Now they face the real test, with a
series of tough games over the next month starting with the Tigers
away.
12 WARRIORS (11)
Win-loss record: 5-7
First 10 rounds, they win all their home games and lose all their
away games. Next three rounds, they lose two at home and win one
away. I guess that means they will beat the Sharks on the road this
weekend.
13 CANBERRA (13)
Win-loss record: 4-7
The world is closing in on them now. The only team they have
beaten in their last six games is the Rabbitohs. They need to fire
up for a win at home over the Broncos this weekend or their season
will be over.
14 BULLDOGS (14)
Win-loss record: 4-8
The season is already over for the Bulldogs - injuries have made
sure of that. They have bought well for next season, but they still
need to get a few more wins and finish this year feeling good about
themselves.
15 SOUTH SYDNEY (16)
Win-loss record: 2-10
That grinding, groaning noise you heard was the sound of a crane
lifting the Rabbitohs from the bottom of the rankings, where they
have been sitting for I've forgotten how long now. Cue the
applause.
16 NORTH QUEENSLAND (15)
Win-loss record: 3-9
The Cowboys have finally hit rock bottom. They started the season
rated as one of the biggest threats to the Storm, but it has gone
more pear-shaped than even the most pear-shaped pear. Oh, mama.
