1 MELBOURNE (1)

Win-loss record: 9-4

The mark of a great team is when opponents start coming up with radical game plans in an attempt to slow them down and frustrate them out of games. The Cowboys tried it, but they still got whacked by 28 points.

2 MANLY (2)

Win-loss record: 9-4

The trip to Auckland is always dangerous, because you can never be sure which version of the Warriors is going to turn up. They came out to compete on Sunday, but the Sea Eagles didn't get flustered and still won.

3 SYDNEY ROOSTERS (3)

Win-loss record: 10-4

They dropped a heap of ball against the Knights, but, then again, so did the Knights. In the end, they came up with enough plays and enough desperation defence to emerge from a tricky game with a win.

4 CRONULLA (4)

Win-loss record:10-4

They might not be pretty, but they keep getting the job done, and the last time I checked wins were worth the same whether they are ugly or spectacular. They never let opponents get comfortable against them.

5 ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA (6)

Win-loss record: 7-6

Their win over the injury-weakened Panthers was nothing to write home about, but the fact is that last season - or even six weeks ago - they would have found a way to lose that match. Five wins straight now.

6 BRISBANE (8)

Win-loss record: 8-6

They have just got to hang in there, make it through what is left of the difficult State of Origin period, freshen up, get Darren Lockyer back genuinely fit and maybe they will be able to launch a run at this year's title.

7 GOLD COAST (5)

Win-loss record: 8-5

Injuries on the night contributed to their loss to the Rabbitohs, but the cold, hard fact remains that their away record of one win and five losses is the worst of any team that is still in contention to make the finals.

8 PARRAMATTA (7)

Win-loss record: 6-7

Days like last Sunday, when they fought hard only to go down right at the death against tough opposition in the Sharks, are the days when they wish they had not butchered several wins in the first half of the season.

9 NEWCASTLE (9)

Win-loss record: 6-7

Their narrow loss at home to the Roosters could come back to haunt them as early as this weekend, when they go in without their three State of Origin players against a Sea Eagles side that will be missing just one.

10 CANBERRA (12)

Win-loss record: 6-7

The Raiders were about to be officially pronounced dead for this season, but then they breathed new life into their campaign with back-to-back wins over the Broncos and the Bulldogs. Can they keep the roll going?

11 WESTS TIGERS (10)

Win-loss record: 7-7

After two straight losses they have a huge game at home against the Warriors on Sunday. A win there, combined with the two points from the bye the week after, could get them back on track for a run to the finals.

12 PENRITH (11)

Win-loss record: 6-7

Despite their long injury toll, they put themselves in a position to win over the Dragons. But they couldn't get the job done and subsequently complained about the refereeing, which is a sure sign you're under the pump.

13 SOUTH SYDNEY (15)

Win-loss record: 3-10

They haven't lost since the first weekend of June, which is a pretty long run of success when you consider how the Rabbitohs have fared overall this season. Safe to say they have emerged from their slump.

14 WARRIORS (13)

Win-loss record: 5-9

No secret as to why the Warriors are doing so poorly this season, after being a top-four team last year. Their defence is awful. They have conceded more points than even the last-placed Cowboys. Very disappointing.

15 BULLDOGS (14)

Win-loss record: 4-9

They have been severely knocked about by injury this season, but that was no excuse for a 40-point loss at home against the Raiders. The Bulldogs put that game in the too-hard basket and simply racked the cue.

16 NORTH QUEENSLAND (16)

Win-loss record: 3-11

If they studied the draw before the start of the season, they would have marked this weekend's home game against the Rabbitohs as a should win. Now, if they don't win, they will be four points last. Wow.
