1 MELBOURNE (1)

Win-loss record: 14-6

They went on the road and beat Manly in the battle of the heavyweights. Even you Sea Eagles fans who have been into me constantly would now have to agree the Storm deserve to be on top.

2 MANLY (2)

Win-loss record: 14-6

There were certainly some good signs for them against Melbourne, but they dropped too much ball and couldn't match the Storm for big plays. They're going to have to keep working on finding a way.

3 CRONULLA (5)

Win-loss record: 14-6

Yes, they're far from the most dynamic team in the NRL. Yes, they're far from the most exciting team. But they keep winning. They don't give in and you have got to admire their determination.

4 BRISBANE (4)

Win-loss record: 11-1-8

They tried hard before going down with a few players out against the Warriors in Auckland. Don't forget, Melbourne lost there a few weeks ago as well. Still a threat with their best lineup.

5 CANBERRA (6)

Win-loss record: 10-10

Wow. Presuming they go all the way to the finals, they will be the team no-one wants to play, because of their freakish ability to pile on points in a hurry. The job they did on Penrith was awesome.

6 SYDNEY ROOSTERS (3)

Win-loss record: 13-7

They reckon they don't get enough penalties, but they should examine why they have gone soft a few times in games this season. Will will find out where they stand against the Storm on Friday.

7 NEWCASTLE (8)

Win-loss record: 10-10

Another team which, like the Raiders, is developing before our very eyes. Second-rower Cory Paterson and centre Junior Sau are just two of their youngsters who are playing great footy.

8 WARRIORS (10)

Win-loss record: 10-10

They have a 7-3 record at home this season, including wins over Melbourne and Brisbane, so there is no reason they can't win there against Cronulla. But it will probably go down to the wire.

9 WESTS TIGERS (12)

Win-loss record: 10-10

Strong effort to overcome a short turnaround and win on the road against the Dragons. It was the sort of steel we've been looking for from them and which can take them to the finals.

10 ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA (7)

Win-loss record: 10-10

They're in trouble, the Dragons. They were solid in the top eight after winning seven straight, but four losses from their last five games has left them vulnerable. Need key players back.

11 PENRITH (9)

Win-loss record: 9-1-10

It wasn't so much a truck that ran over them in Canberra, but a bunch of finely-tuned sports cars that zipped through them or around them. They will struggle to make the eight after that bash-up.

12 PARRAMATTA (14)

Win-loss record: 9-11

The question is: was Parramatta's form over much of the first 21 rounds the aberration, or was it their shock win over the Roosters? We may find out when they play the Tigers on Monday.

13 SOUTH SYDNEY (11)

Win-loss record: 7-13

They are just nuisance value now, hanging around as potential dangers to top-eight calibre teams who might take them easy. Cronulla didn't fall into the trap. Could Manly, on Sunday?

14 NORTH QUEENSLAND (16)

Win-loss record: 4-16
After 13 losses in a row, all it took was one win against the right opponent in this case, the Bulldogs for the Cowboys to breathe new life into the battle to avoid the wooden spoon.

15 GOLD COAST (13)

Win-loss record: 9-11

The Titans had been on the ropes, taking punches, for a few weeks and the Knights finally sat them on their backsides. Injuries have killed them and they will be forced to watch the finals again.

16 BULLDOGS (15)

Win-loss record: 5-15

Not the position such a proud club should be in, but they don't want us to pity them. Must put their bodies on the line or the last four rounds will be the embarrassment to end all embarrassments.
