GREG BIRD enjoyed end-of-season drinks with Sharks players last night, and it might be the last time he is able to do so as their teammate after two new charges were brought against him by NSW Police.

The representative star, already facing the charge of maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm for allegedly glassing his girlfriend, Katie Milligan, in his Cronulla apartment on August 24, was yesterday told he would be charged with public mischief and false accusation.

The new charges relate to Bird allegedly blaming his flatmate at the time, golfer Brent Watson, for the assault on Milligan.

The Cronulla Sharks player must answer a fourth charge of common assault relating to an alleged incident involving another woman at a Cronulla nightclub on January 19 this year, and is to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on October 9. It is believed if Bird is found guilty of any of these charges, the Sharks will sack him.

"I'm sweet, I'm just having a beer with the boys," Bird said when contacted last night. "I've got no comment on [the charges] … it is out of my hands."

He did concede the past two months had been the toughest of his life. Milligan sought unsuccessfully to remove the apprehended violence order imposed on Bird by the charging officers, and has been unwilling to give a statement against Bird.

The Sharks suspended Bird indefinitely after he was charged and are awaiting the result of his court hearing before deciding on further action.

With the NRL keen to stamp out negative publicity arising from off-field incidents, Cronulla are in a bind regardless of the outcome. Some sponsors and supporters called for Bird's reinstatement during the team's finals run, which ended last Friday with a 28-0 loss to Melbourne Storm. Any conviction would also place in doubt Bird's position in the Kangaroos World Cup squad.

In Sutherland Local Court last month, police alleged that Bird had initially claimed Watson glassed Milligan. Bird had called Watson soon after the incident and allegedly said: "Something has happened to Katie. It was an accident. There is blood everywhere in the unit. We have told police it's you. How do you feel about that?"

The court also heard that Bird allegedly put Watson in contact with a solicitor, who told him: "We don't want this matter getting into the media." Milligan has said she stands by Bird despite the assault charges, saying he had not harmed her and that she still loved him.

She suffered a fractured eye socket and had surgery at Prince of Wales Hospital for glass wounds to her eye. There have been some suggestions that Bird will argue he threw a glass object at a wall and shards deflected into Milligan's eye.

Watson, Bird's former best friend, has refused to comment publicly on the case.
