AFTER losing hooker Michael Ennis to the Bulldogs, Brisbane are set to extend the contract of NSW Origin halfback Peter Wallace beyond next season.
Wallace, who starred for the Blues in last month's series opening win over Queensland after being called into the playmaking role when Newcastle's Kurt Gidley was ruled out with a fractured cheekbone, has a clause in his deal with the Broncos that enables him to negotiate with other clubs if he plays representative football. But the 22-year-old Penrith product said yesterday his manager, Allan Gainey, had initiated talks with Brisbane since he made his representative debut for City against Country last month, followed by his Origin debut.
"I won't be doing anything until after the Origin series," Wallace told AAP.
Gainey said whether Wallace signs beyond 2009 would depend on the "figures" Brisbane came up with.
"But Peter's a pretty loyal kid. He knows where he got his big opportunity and where he got his chance," Gainey said. "We're going to sit down with Brisbane and give them every opportunity to keep him if they've got what he deserves."
Brisbane, who have signed Storm youngster Israel Folau, have been forced to let some quality players go because of the salary cap. Ennis yesterday became the latest Bronco to announce his departure next season, agreeing to a three-year deal with the Bulldogs, who last week snared the prized signing of Brisbane teammate and Queensland Origin prop Ben Hannant on a $1 million three-year package.
Meanwhile, Knights forward Mitchell Sargent has found a new home after signing to play with Castleford in the English Super League. The former Parramatta, Melbourne and North Queensland forward was given permission by the Knights test the open market two weeks ago, despite being contracted to the club until the end of 2009.
