Former Raider Michael Monaghan wants to finish his career playing alongside younger brother Joel and has named Canberra as a possible destination.

But the Raiders are unlikely to make a bid for the former Manly captain, meaning Joel Monaghan could be headed overseas as early as the end of next year, when his contract with Canberra expires.

Michael Monaghan is currently holidaying in Canberra, following his first season with English Super League club Warrington Wolves.

The 28-year-old has another three years to run on his contract, while Joel is contracted to the Raiders next season with an option for 2010.

Michael said he and Joel wanted to play out their careers together, whether that be in Canberra where they both debuted for the Raiders in 2001 or overseas.

"Joel and I spoke about that the other day. We both said we want to play with each other before we call it a day," Monaghan said.

"Whether that's here or overseas I just don't know, but Canberra would be a place we'd be interested in."

Monaghan was confronted with conflicting media reports regarding he and Joel when he returned to Australia last week.

One magazine said the brothers were set to reunite at the Raiders, while another had them both playing at Warrrington.

He said they were yet to explore either option.

"I don't know what mail those guys have, but it's not the case at the moment," he said.

"I'll try and keep all my options open. Plenty of players have thought they would have a long career with one club, but also as to what country and where you just never know. There hasn't been any discussions from my end, but there have been a few people asking questions if I wanted to come back.

"Canberra would definitely be a club."

Raiders chief executive Don Furner didn't rule out making a bid for Monaghan's services if he became available at the end of next year.

But the club already has playmakers Terry Campese, Marc Herbert, Josh McCrone and Michael Picker on its books.

The Raiders have largely focused on shoring up their junior talent following the sacking of star halfback Todd Carney this season, making it unlikely an ageing Monaghan would fit into their plans.

"Never say no to anything, but my understanding is he's on very good money," Furner said.

"We have Herbert, McCrone, Campese, no worries, we'll be going for youth. But we'd definitely consider him if he came knocking."

Joel Monaghan returned to the Raiders this season following a three-year stint at the Sydney Roosters.

He won the club's player-of-the-year award, made his NSW State of Origin debut and was selected in Australia's preliminary World Cup squad.

The Raiders are hoping to further extend the contracts of Picker and under-20s hooker Travis Waddell.

They have already secured fellow Toyota Cup stars Joel Thompson, Justin Carney, Josh Dugan, Shaun Fensom, Jarrod Croker, Drury Low, Daniel Vidot and Jarrad Kennedy on long-term deals.

All those players bar Thompson who fractured an eye socket last week will play in Sunday's Toyota Cup grand final against the Brisbane Broncos.
