Canberra Raiders halfback Todd Carney launched himself into State of Origin contention with one of the most dominant individual performances of the NRL season in yesterday's 30-24 victory.

The 21-year-old inspired his team to a come-from-behind win over the Wests Tigers at Canberra Stadium, scoring a brilliant 70m solo try and setting up four others.

It was the type of performance that will make NSW selectors take notice as they search for a playmaker for this year's Origin series.

With his team trailing by 14 points at half-time, Carney took the game by the scruff of the neck in the second half, taking on the tiring Tigers' defensive line with ball in hand and winning his team good field position with a string of well-placed kicks.

His 73rd minute try and subsequent conversion gave his team the lead for the first time in the game as the Raiders pulled off an inspired victory.

After watching his marquee player in such dominant form, Raiders coach Neil Henry urged Country Origin selectors to draft Carney into Laurie Daley's team for the May 2 showdown with City.

"I think he's an outstanding talent and that [NSW selectors] will look at him," Henry said.

Carney showcased all his skills yesterday.

He set up Adrian Purtell's first try with a cutout pass and his second with a line break.

Alan Tongue's try came after he dived on a Carney grubber over the Tigers' line.

Carney also made 17 tackles in what was easily his most complete game of the season.

He said the task now was to string such performances together to ensure he was seriously considered for representative duties this season.

His name has been mentioned along with Brisbane's Peter Wallace, Manly's Matt Orford, Cronulla's Brett Kimmorley and Paramatta's Brett Finch as a possible No7 for NSW this year.

"Obviously when your name is mentioned it's in the back of your head before the game and after the game," Carney said.

"Hopefully my name is tossed around Country Origin selection time and if I get a chance to play that you put your best foot forward and go from there."

Carney said a conscious effort to take on the line more had been the catalyst for his strong showing.

He also studied video footage of Gold Coast's Prince this week in a bid to improve his short kicking game.

His only blemish yesterday was his goalkicking. He managed just three conversions from six attempts.

Carney wasn't the only standout for the Raiders yesterday.

Hooker Lincoln Withers was outstanding in defence and out of dummyhalf, while winger Purtell scored three tries including a 95m effort in the dying minutes to ice the game.

In a sour note for the Raiders, prop Josh Miller is set to miss several weeks after injuring his ankle early in the second half.

Miller left the stadium on crutches, but hoped the injury was just bone bruising. He will have scans today.

The Tigers also suffered an injury, with forward Bronson Harrison suffering what appeared to be serious knee damage early in the second half.

It came after he had managed two tries in the opening 40 minutes.
