HOME-GROWN rugby league star Ashton Sims had Hawks fans shaking their heads in disbelief during the half-time break of last Wednesday's clash with Cairns.

A member of Fiji's national side, the St George Illawarra-cum-Brisbane forward was in town for his team's World Cup clash with France.

The Fijian squad was in the crowd at the WEC and Sims agreed to an on-court chat with announcer Dave McFarland.

"Macca" then invited the Gerringong junior to showcase his basketball prowess with a shot from half-court.

A confident-looking Sims let fly with a two-handed heave and found nothing but net.

With the crowd on its feet, Macca handed the ball to Sims for another shot from the same spot. The ball followed exactly the same trajectory before hitting the back of the ring and bouncing away.

Given that his second shot was so close, the crowd wanted one more for the road and Sims stepped up to the mark, went through the same routine and sent the ball on its way.

Staying dead straight in flight, the ball banged hard into the backboard and straight through the hoop.

Sims casually saluted his delighted audience and sauntered off the court, almost as though he knew he was always going to make it.

"We were in the change room and heard the crowd cheering," Hawk Glen Saville said. "I thought someone had won a car."

Sims didn't get a car but he provided a fond memory for those who saw "the shots".
