SIONE FAUMUINA is set to follow in the footsteps of Craig Gower by becoming the latest rugby league international to switch to rugby union in France.
The North Queensland forward is off contract at the end of the season and is contemplating offers to play union or league in France next year.
The former Kiwi international said the move appealed to him and his partner, Silver Ferns star Temepara George, who is planning to retire and follow him overseas at the end of the trans-Tasman netball season.
"It's just a lifestyle change," Faumuina said. "I have a few friends that play rugby or league in France and they say it's awesome over there, a great atmosphere. You also get travel Europe dirt cheap.
"I played rugby when I was younger and I come from a family of rugby players, so I know a bit about the game, although I know it's a different story when you get out on the field.
"I wouldn't go so far as [aiming to make] the All Blacks because they have a rule where you have to be New Zealand-based to play for them.
"If I chose to play rugby, there's an avenue, being Western Samoan, to play for Samoa. It would be another chance to represent my country of heritage. That holds a big appeal for me as well."
Gower is playing for Bayonne after 11 years at Penrith. Faumuina might contact the former Kangaroos halfback for his thoughts on the move.
"I don't know if I should say this but a lot of the All Blacks and Wallabies running around today could be on double what they are on now overseas," Faumuina said.
"The Wallaby and All Blacks jerseys mean so much to a lot of players and they forsake that money to stay. There were reports Dan Carter was offered more than $1 million a season to play in France."
The 27-year-old is recovering from a groin/hernia operation but could be available for Saturday's clash with Manly at Bluetongue Stadium.
"My main focus is to get back on the field, try to get a spot back in the first grade team and get to the play-offs," Faumuina said. "To win a grand final would be an awesome way to end my career in the NRL."
Northern Mystics midcourter George, the winner of the New Zealand version of Dancing with the Stars, is also keen on the move.
"She will definitely finish up [netball] this year," Faumuina said.
"She's got a netball teammate of hers engaged to a rugby player that is playing over there, so she's going over in a couple of months."
"She's trying to get me to play over in Europe, so I really don't mind."
Asked about reports he could also dance before the television cameras, he said: "There's no way I'll be doing any ballroom stuff."
