Departing cult hero Luke 'The Cougar' Williamson gives a
unique
insight into the Sea Eagles' grand final week.
■ MONDAY
In theory the Manly club is run with military precision. Every week we get running sheets telling us what we have to do and where we have to be at all times. It's Dessie's way of keeping us in line. Unfortunately we've got a couple of time junkies who push the limits. I'm talking about the likes of Steve Bell. While some of us get to our appointments early and are well prepared, the likes of "Saved by the Bell" appear to be living in another time zone. He was again in fine form today, rocking up late for our team photo. The Cougar is also a big fan of keeping a low profile but this is ridiculous.
■ TUESDAY
There was pressure from the fans to shift the grand final from night time to day. In the end the NRL compromised by holding a twilight grand final. I believe this is a dangerous move. I'm not sure whether it will be a full moon come Sunday arvo but there will be hell to pay if David Williams morphs into Teen Wolf as the lights go down.
■ WEDNESDAY
Seriously, there are some very strange people at our club. When we went to Luna Park (right) on Wednesday it was a first for some of the boys. A couple got carried away with the fanfare and the rides. Those boys know who they are.
■ THURSDAY
I think it was a masterstroke from the NRL to broadcast the grand final breakfast. I'd be very interested in the ratings for that. I reckon watching us eat would be compulsive viewing. It's fascinating how they organise this stuff.
■ FRIDAY
There are rumours that Dessie is actually my dad and I'm hoping that will help me at the selection table today. I've been a good boy and done all my chores this week so I've certainly been on my best behaviour. Perhaps The Cougar will need to use the secret art of mind control to get a start! Seriously, though, even though I've been named on an extended bench, it hurts knowing I'm an unlikely starter. It would have been nice to get one more game in the maroon and white before going to the English Super League but injury has meant that I haven't been able to play in the big games. Six weeks ago I was ruled out for the season due to a hamstring injury but to the credit of the rehab staff (but mainly to myself!) I have bounced back and made myself available for selection. It's disappointing to miss out but to be a part of the club and experience this week is magnificent.
■ SATURDAY
It's a shame I won't be playing tomorrow. I'm going to celebrate the first wedding anniversary with my lady friend Michelle next week. Rather than actually going out and buying some jewellery, I like the idea of just presenting her with an NRL premiership ring instead. To the millions of Cougar fans out there, thanks for supporting me and the Sea Eagles during my seven glorious years at the club. Go Manly!
