WARRIORS five-eighth Michael Witt last night admitted the highlight of his career could have been the lowlight when he nearly blew the match-winning try in their 18-15 upset of Melbourne at Olympic Park yesterday.

Witt stood in-goal with the ball above his head before grounding it, leaving Warriors coach Ivan Cleary far from impressed as he cheered his side's 70-metre run to the tryline with just two minutes remaining in the game.

Witt said he had been merely attempting to run down the clock but he assured Cleary the stunt would never be repeated. It almost certainly would have ended the Warriors' season if Melbourne skipper Cam Smith had succeeded in knocking the ball from Witt's hands.

"I just spoke to Ivan so hopefully everything's OK," Witt said. "I could have been discarded from playing rugby league ever again if I dropped it. It could have been the worst day of my life but we won, so who cares?

"I actually thought that there was only one dude chasing me and I thought when I stepped him right at the end I could just stand in the in-goal and waste time standing there before I put the ball down. But someone else was right there so I ended up looking like a bit of a tool and a big-noter.

"That certainly wasn't the idea but I won't be doing that again."

The try came after centre Jerome Ropati sent Manu Vatuvei on a rampaging run from deep in his own end of the field and the giant winger managed to bump off a number of defenders before putting Witt over.

"I've never scored a more important try than that," Witt said. "I just followed big Manu … I was just smart enough to hang around him."
