IN THE end, Amos Roberts jnr showed the sort of timing that has made his father one of the best finishers in rugby league, avoiding inducement and entering the world naturally at 12.20pm yesterday.

Amos Roberts snr had considered asking his family doctor to induce the birth of his second child but when his wife's waters broke in the morning, it wasn't necessary. Just after midday the Robertses welcomed their first son, who weighed 4.27 kilograms and measured 53cm.

"He has got good timing - or I should say he took his time. It was amazing, exciting," an exhausted Roberts said.

The Roosters winger's plan was to witness the birth and then fly to New Zealand with his teammates at 4pm but wife Zoe wasn't impressed by that idea, so he will instead depart today.

Roosters coach Brad Fittler said yesterday: "I tried to get him on a flight this arvo. Zoe wouldn't accept it, so he will fly over tomorrow."

Amos jnr had the features of his father and grandfather, said Roberts, who was impressed by his son's size but suggested he might opt for a career other than league. The couple is still working on a middle name, although Roberts said he would be affectionately known as "Little Mossy".

Roberts now turns his attention to Friday's semi-final against the Warriors and his personal battle with giant flanker Manu Vatuvei.

"I was looking forward to the game already, but this just gives me extra motivation," he said. "I'm even more pumped up and ready to go."

Meanwhile, the Cronulla Sharks are using their week off to get to know each other a little better as they search for a drought-breaking premiership, AAP reports.

Ricky Stuart's men headed off yesterday for a three-day bonding camp at Kiama in an effort to maintain their momentum before Friday week's preliminary final. Stuart is eager to ensure his players don't switch off after earning a break this weekend.

"We are a really close bunch and it is even more important now to grow a bit more of a bond," he told 2KY.
