IN THE land of the long white cloud another big, white fluffy ball of moisture has developed over the NRL career of Sydney Roosters fullback Anthony Minichiello.

Just two matches into his comeback from a neck problem that threatened his career, Minichiello is poised to become the next member of league's French revolution, with the 28-year-old believed to be close to a deal with Mark Gasnier's new club, Stade Francais.

With Minichiello taking up a significant slice of the Roosters' salary cap, the club is prepared to let the former Test and Origin representative explore other options. There has even been some suggestions the Roosters have encouraged the move, even though Minichiello is contracted to the club until the end of next season.

The problem is his injury troubles of recent seasons. He played just 10 matches last season, and tomorrow night's clash with the Warriors - possibly his final match in the NRL - will be his ninth this year. A stint with a European rugby union outfit could prolong his career, while the rigours of the NRL appear to be shortening it.

Minichiello also has a European passport, which would make the transition to rugby in France or elsewhere in Europe far easier as he would not take up an import position.

Minichiello would not comment yesterday, saying he had placed himself on a media ban this week, while coach Brad Fittler was also offering little.

Chief executive Brian Canavan said: "Our sole focus is getting him back and getting himself right as he continues his current contract. That finishes next year and it may go beyond."

Former St George Illawarra centre Gasnier left for France on Sunday, a day after the Dragons' exit from the premiership to link with his new club, coached by former Waratahs boss Ewen McKenzie, joining Sonny Bill Williams, Luke Rooney and Craig Gower in a competition that continues to target NRL stars.

There could be further unwanted complications for the Roosters this week for their sudden-death final. Centre Setaimata Sa did not train yesterday due to a hip problem and remains in doubt for the sold-out clash with the Warriors at Mt Smart Stadium. Fittler said Sa would be given until tomorrow to prove his fitness.

If Sa is ruled out, interchange player Mitchell Aubusson would be his likely replacement, with speculation Rory Kostjaysn may be the unlikely man promoted.
