1 MELBOURNE (1)
Win-loss record: 12-5
It was wet, the game was stop-start and there were fights, but
there was still some football in there and the Storm extinguished
the fire of a Dragons outfit that raised a big effort after being
reduced to 12 men.
2 MANLY (2)
Win-loss record: 13-4
Lost their halfback before the game and then lost their
five-eighth during it, but despite being down on playmakers they
were still way too good for the Eels. They did it on huge doses of
commitment and determination.
3 CRONULLA (4)
Win-loss record:12-5
It was always going to be interesting to see how they came out of
that beating they got from Manly. They emerged fairly well to
narrowly win what was always going to be a tight game against the
desperate Knights.
4 SYDNEY ROOSTERS (3)
Win-loss record: 11-6
They were very disappointing against the Raiders, but they only
drop one spot after their second straight loss because the teams
that were ranked fifth, sixth and seventh last week all lost as
well.
5 BRISBANE (8)
Win-loss record: 9-1-7
The Broncos may have only beaten the Cowboys, but at least they
beat them. The three teams that were above them in the rankings
last week all lost to teams that were below them on the competition
table.
6 CANBERRA (10)
Win-loss record: 8-9
The win over the Roosters was their second straight against a
top-eight team. Pity they now have problems with player behaviour
off the field that they have to deal with at a time when the team
is making a run.
7 ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA (6)
Win-loss record: 9-8
The send-off of Jason Ryles didn't cost them the game against the
Storm, but they obviously would have finished closer than 26-0 had
he stayed on. Need to steady the ship against the Bulldogs on
Monday.
8 GOLD COAST (5)
Win-loss record: 9-8
Without Scott Prince, they just didn't have the creative ability
to go all the way with a Panthers outfit that has so much scoring
potential. They are going to have dig very deep to make the finals
without him.
9 PENRITH (11)
Win-loss record: 8-1-8
They showed what they can do when they controlled the ball better
against the Titans. Now they must back it up on Saturday against
the Tigers at home, where they have a strangely poor record this
season.
10 SOUTH SYDNEY (7)
Win-loss record: 6-11
They had to lose sooner or later and the Tigers got them good and
proper. The big test now for them is to prove they can bounce back.
It will be very hard on the road against a Knights side desperate
to win.
11 WARRIORS (12)
Win-loss record: 8-9
Their three straight wins have all come against teams which - like
them - are outside of the top eight, but there was a style about
them that suggests their challenge for a finals spot will be hard
to stop.
12 NEWCASTLE (9)
Win-loss record: 7-10
The Knights reckon they get penalised too much and don't deserve
it, but they have got to shut thoughts of being hard done by out of
their minds and just get the job done home against the Rabbitohs on
Sunday.
13 WESTS TIGERS (15)
Win-loss record: 8-9
Will their win over the Rabbitohs start a run that takes them to
the finals or will they continue to have more downs than ups and
miss out again? Their game on the road against the Panthers will
tell us a lot.
14 BULLDOGS (13)
Win-loss record: 5-12
As soon as word got out that Sonny Bill Williams wasn't playing
because of injury, the betting for their game against the Warriors
turned around. The market was right. Without SBW, they are up the
creek.
15 PARRAMATTA (14)
Win-loss record: 7-10
That creek I mentioned is the one Eels star Nathan Hindmarsh
recently said his team was up. It's getting crowded there. Trounced
by a Sea Eagles team that knows how to win. The Eels have forgotten
how.
16 NORTH QUEENSLAND (16)
Win-loss record: 3-14
The Cowboys have been shooting blanks for so long now that
whenever they pull a gun these days not even the most nervous
person flinches. The season can't end quickly enough for them.
