Canberra Raiders back-rower Joel Thompson may bypass surgery on his fractured eye socket and feature in the World Cup curtain-raiser between an Australian Indigenous team and New Zealand Maori later this month.
Thompson and Raiders winger Justin Carney were named in the indigenous team yesterday, taking the number of current and former Canberra players to feature in the World Cup to seven.
The 20-year-old had initially feared he would require surgery after missing Canberra's Toyota Cup premiership win over Brisbane last Sunday because of the injury.
But Raiders medical staff had some good news for him yesterday, telling him he was now unlikely to go under the knife.
He said he would know by early next week if he could play for the indigenous team, which former Raiders coach Neil Henry will lead.
"I should be right to play," Thompson said.
"Most of that team play first grade so it would be good to play with some class players.
"It's a great opportunity."
The clash against the Maori team will be the curtain-raiser to Australia's World Cup opener against New Zealand at the Sydney Football Stadium on October 26.
Raiders prop Scott Logan and Manly grand final hero and former Canberra winger Michael Robertson were named in Scotland's final squad yesterday and will play France at Canberra Stadium on the same day.
Former Raiders back-rower Neville Costigan will play for Papua New Guinea in the World Cup, while five-eighth Terry Campese and centre Joel Monaghan are in Australia's squad.
Campese and Monaghan will fly to Sydney for a medical today.
