Manly prop Jason King is set to miss a possible pre-season match in Macau after he and five-eighth Jamie Lyon were charged yesterday over separate incidents in the opening minutes of the grand final loss to Melbourne.
King is in line for a ban of up to two matches after being charged with grade-two knee-lifting from the seventh minute incident that left Storm lock Dallas Johnson heavily concussed.
However, Lyon can avoid suspension by entering an early guilty plea to a grade-one dangerous throw over his second-minute tackle on Billy Slater.
Melbourne's Ben Cross was also charged with grade-three contrary conduct (unnecessary contact with the face) over an alleged gouging incident involving Manly fullback Brett Stewart that the Newcastle-bound prop labelled "a joke".
The charges late yesterday added to a bitter postscript for the Sea Eagles after Lyon was dumped from the Australian team to play New Zealand in Wellington on October 14, and centre Steve Matai admitted he was likely to withdraw from the Kiwis squad to have shoulder surgery.
But there was some good news for Manly, with chief executive Grant Mayer revealing yesterday that the Sea Eagles had secured Viva Macau airlines as a new back-of-jersey sponsor for next season and were looking to play a pre-season match in the former Portuguese colony that is now a special administrative region of China, like Hong Kong.
"We've just got to find a partner to play over there so I'll be on the phone to the other CEOs tomorrow," Mayer said.
Manly had scheduled a trial against Melbourne on February 16 but the Storm will now contest the World Club Challenge against the Super League champions on that date.
The NRL has asked for an indication on whether King and Lyon plan to contest their charges by noon today, but Mayer said a decision may not be made until later in the week.
Cross, who faces a two- or three-match ban, told the Herald after the grand final "there was nothing to it". "His face got in the road when I was putting my hand on the ground."
Manly's players yesterday combined their Mad Monday celebrations with a farewell for Warrington-bound pair Michael Monaghan and Chris Hicks and North Queensland recruit Travis Burns.
