BULLDOGS officials expect Sonny Bill Williams to attend their next meeting with his management to discuss his future at the club, but had no problems with former NRL stars turned boxers Anthony Mundine and Solomon Haumono turning up on Wednesday night to lend their support to the 22-year-old superstar.
Williams, who is considering a move to rugby union, asked Mundine and Haumono to join his father, John, brother, John Arthur, and manager, Khoder Nasser, at the 90-minute meeting.
"Solomon is of a Polynesian background and is a former Canterbury player so he has an understanding of the club, and he is someone Sonny looks up to and has a lot of respect for," Nasser said. "Sonny Bill is also close to Anthony, and he is someone who reached great heights in rugby league before becoming a world champion boxer."
According to Bulldogs CEO Todd Greenberg, Nasser began the meeting at a Brighton restaurant by explaining that Mundine and Haumono were present because they held Williams in the highest regard both on and off the field and wanted to convey his value to the Bulldogs and the game.
"My response was that the three most senior people at the Bulldogs in myself, the chief executive of the football club, George Peponis, the chairman, and John Ballesty, the chief executive of our leagues club, feel the same way about Sonny Bill and we were all present because w're the people that make the decisions at the club," Greenberg said.
But he acknowledged there were issues to be resolved, and money wasn't the only cause of Williams angst. However, both parties had agreed not to publicly discuss what was said at the meeting.
Greenberg said the next meeting would be in a week or two, and he expected Williams to attend, possibly with incoming Bulldogs coach Kevin Moore.
