STORM captain Cam Smith seems likely to stay at the club after talks with the Gold Coast Titans broke down yesterday.
On the eve of a meeting today with Wests Tigers hooker Robbie Farah on the Gold Coast, Titans chief executive Michael Searle told Smith and his agent, Issac Moses, a five-year offer tabled to the Test star's former manager, Jim Banaghan, was no longer available.
Searle last night said the club was frustrated that the negotiations seemed to have stalled after Moses took over handling Smith's affairs and the Titans would now focus on trying to entice Farah away from the Tigers.
However, Moses countered that the Gold Coast had withdrawn only after he told Searle that Smith's preference was to stay in Melbourne, although he has other offers on the table.
Storm officials last night denied a deadline had been imposed on Smith to accept their offer by tomorrow afternoon but are keen to have answers on his intentions as soon as possible.
Having offered Smith a three-year deal with Melbourne and to have an option on his services for a fourth season, the Storm have made the 25-year-old Kangaroos hooker their priority signing.
Searle said he was disappointed the Titans had not been able to get Smith to visit the Gold Coast and the club's facilities, as Farah is doing today.
"The first phone call I had from his manager was today and it seemed like he wanted to negotiate over the phone," Searle said. "But this wasn't something we wanted to do in a two-minute phone conversation so we withdrew. It's too big a deal for us."
Moses said he had never been advised of the details of any offer from the Titans but that Smith had several others he was considering, including Melbourne's.
"I don't want to play any games with anyone - we're talking about the future of the Australian captain and the Queensland captain and we want it to be done right," Moses said.
Meanwhile, Searle said the situation with Smith would have no bearing on any offer from the Titans to sign Farah, who is off contract with Wests Tigers at the end of next season, which means he is allowed to negotiate his future with clubs now.
The Titans are hoping the presence of former Tigers second-rower Anthony Laffranchi and halfback Scott Prince will help lure Farah to the Gold Coast club.
