With Origin coach Mal Meninga patrolling the sidelines at Red Hill, Broncos prop Ben Hannant had the distinct feeling he was a man under the microscope.
Meninga, the Maroons mentor, watched the entire Broncos session this morning, constantly chatting to Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett before standing back to take in a sharp hour-and-a-half of skills and defence drills.
In his sights was Hannant, the white-haired prop who has blossomed into one of the NRL's biggest improvers in 2008 thanks to his robust runs and toiling work in defence.
With incumbent Maroons prop Steve Price set to miss at least another month with the hamstring injury he sustained in round one, Hannant is a genuine prospect of making his Queensland debut on May 21 in the series opener in Sydney.
His form has been so impressive he was mentioned as a bolter for the Kangaroo side to play New Zealand in the Centenary Test next Friday night.
The devoted Mormon and family man was loathe to speculate on his representative prospects but believed his form has him ready to take the next step in his career.
"Any Queenslander growing up would love to play for the state. I'm working hard for the club and if I play good footy, I'm a chance. The first thing is to play good footy for the club," Hannant said.
"I think I am (ready). I'm maturing every year and working hard. The selectors know what they are doing and if they think I can do the job, I'm going to do my best for them."
Hannant has been linked to a move to St George, with reports emerging he may follow his coach to the Dragons after his contract with Brisbane concludes at the end of the season.
Hannant, who manages himself, refused to rule out a relocation to Wollongong, saying he would be happy to remain in Brisbane but the welfare of his family came first.
The Broncos have made it clear they want him to stay but are yet to table a formal offer. Any Origin duty would give Hannant more power at the bargaining table.
"At the end of the day it's a job as well. I've got family and a wife and kids to look after. Whatever's best for my family is the decision I'm going to make. But you can't make a decision if you're not playing good footy - nobody will want you," Hannant said.
"I don't know what's going on yet. I'm just focusing on playing good footy. The club's coming up to a tough time of the year. I'm still looking at options."
In team news, Test centre Justin Hodges may be in doubt for Saturday's clash with the Wests Tigers but Tonie Carroll looked to pull through a rigorous fitness test and should recover for a number of niggles.
