After consecutive wins placed it just one point from the top eight, the Canberra Raiders face the possibility of sacking one its most important players, halfback Todd Carney.

The club is investigating reports the 22-year-old urinated on a patron - reportedly a friend of teammate Dan Tilse - at the All Bar Nun hotel on Sunday night.

Carney has been stood down by the Raiders indefinitely as police investigate the allegations against him.

Carney faces the sack and de-registration by the NRL, AAP reports.

However the Herald understands the club is more livid at him than it is prepared to sack him.

The club has also stood down Carney's teammate, Bronx Goodwin, who allegedly assaulted two men outside the hotel at 11.40pm.

The allegations come as the Raiders surge towards the semi-finals on the back of two consecutive wins, against the Sydney Roosters and St George-Illawarra Dragons.

The club is in ninth spot, just one point from the top eight, and faces the Gold Coast Titans this weekend who are without captain Scott Prince.

Carney, the Raiders' halfback, has been crucial to its recent successes. He was re-signed by the club in March until the end of 2010.

NSW State of Origin selector Laurie Daley last year said Carney had the potential to become a representative player.

However, while his on-field performances have been sparkling, off the field Carney has had a history of trouble.

Last February, after his licence was suspended for five years for mid-range drink-driving, Carney led police on a car chase through Canberra in May.

He later handed himself in and was handed 200 hours community service.
