After losing first-up to France, they completed their group commitments by beating Fiji 18-16. It wasn't enough to get them into the semi-final qualifier, but it was the Bravehearts' first win at a World Cup.

Their big win over Samoa in their final game of the group stage. They had narrowly lost their opening game, against Tonga, and needed to beat the Samoans by enough to top the group on points for-and-against differential. They did it easily, 34-16.

They began well enough, beating Scotland 36-18 after a hard-fought match, but it was all downhill after that. They were tipped to push for a semi-final spot but it became clear when eventual semi-finalists Fiji belted them 42-6 that they weren't up to that standard.

Undoubtedly, their victory over Ireland 30-14 in the semi-final qualifier to set up a clash against Australia. They lost 52-0 to the Aussies but their mixture of players from the local competition and some NRL stars did their country proud.

They saved their best for last, when they pulverised Scotland 48-0 in the play-off for seventh and eighth. OK, it was ordinary opposition but at least the Tongans showed what they can achieve when they get a roll-on.

Their first four games were like one long highlights reel. They scored 180 points and conceded just 16 in brushing aside New Zealand, England, PNG and Fiji to make the final, in which they started hot favourites.

They played in the opening game of the tournament, against England, and looked like they might cause a huge upset when they led at half-time. They couldn't go on with it, losing 32-22, but it was a spirited performance by the mostly part-timers.
